DEC marks first anniversary of Ukraine war with emotional film

To mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has partnered with Stink Films and creative agency Don’t Panic to launch a film highlighting the £400 million raised by the UK to help the people of Ukraine.

To aid in this mammoth effort the DEC brought together 15 leading UK aid charities to quickly and efficiently raise funds at a time when European security faces its biggest threat since the end of the Second World War.

Co-directed by Rick Dodds and Leo Maguire, ‘Never Alone’ was shot remotely over three days in Ukraine this February, with Stink Films and Don’t Panic collaborating Ukrainian service company Radioaktive to source filming locations.

“This film is a time capsule of Ukraine in February 2023 – exactly one year since the conflict began. We wanted to
capture the country in the most cinematic way possible. We’re used to seeing a conflict-torn place through a
documentary and news lens. Not through crafted cinema,” Writer and co-director, Rick Dodds said.

All cast and crew were made of Ukrainians who have chosen either to return or remain within the country despite the very present danger to their lives, with the film aiming to demonstrate their strength, defiance and patriotism.

Radioaktive founder, Darko Skulsky added: “For us as a company and even more so as Ukrainians, it was a must that we do a project like this. All help, any voice that can spread the word, share the pain, needs to be supported. I can’t thank my friends at Stink enough for asking us to shoot this project in Ukraine.”
