Superdrug donates £175k to Marie Curie registered nurses to celebrate International Nurses day

Superdrug is celebrating International Nurses Day by raising £175,000 to fund the equivalent of all Marie Curie registered nurses working in the Marie Curie Nursing Service for a week.

The retailer’s campaign – titled ‘Purchases for Nurses’ – will see Superdrug stores and its website promote specific products to raise money to help fund all 155 Marie Curie registered nurses.

According to Superdrug, the need for Marie Curie nurses will only increase in the future as by 2035 two thirds of people over 65 will be living with multiple health conditions.

Until 16 May, the retailer will be donating 2p for every cosmetic product sold to Marie Curie.

“We have partnered with Marie Curie for the last 10 years and have raised over £10 million for the charity so far,” Superdurg chief commercial officer Simon Comins said. “It is a charity that is very close to all of our hearts and this week of International Nurses Day we are so pleased to be able to fund the amazing Marie Curie nurses that dedicate so much to families that need support through incredibly hard times.”

Call the Midwife and RSC’s My Neighbour Totoro actor Mei Mac will also help promote the campaign.

“I’m proud to support our hard working Marie Curie nurses and the Superdrug ‘Purchase for Nurses’ campaign,” Mac said. “We all hope our loved ones pass through the end of their life with compassionate care and I am endlessly grateful to the incredible work that nurses do. Please support this campaign in raising a much needed £175K for this essential charity work, so that Marie Curie can continue delivering their vital services to our loved ones and families during some of life’s most difficult times.”

Marie Curie chief fundraising, marketing and communications officer, Maria Novell, added: “Marie Curie is hugely excited to be launching a campaign with Superdrug to coincide with International Nurses Day and shine a spotlight on the incredible work of Marie Curie community nurses. The money raised from this generous fundraising from Superdrug, their customers and partners will allow our community nurses to continue providing support and care to make people’s final days the best they can be. Today our services are needed more than ever, and we are thrilled to have the long-standing support of Superdrug to help us reach more people who need us.”
