Channel 4 courts Gen Z with new streaming experience

Channel 4.com is introducing an app-like streaming experience for mobiles, tablets, laptops and other connected devices in an effort to capture Gen Z audiences.

The update includes show-led design, with wide screen video and stand-out imagery to make shows easier to find, and a viewing experience with easy to browse episodes, as well as inclusive features such as better audio description, sign language and subtitles.

In addition, it includes improved guidance options around ratings, accessibility and stream definition, and personalised recommendations based on streamer’s recent history.

The upgrade aims to reflect the younger generation’s desire to watch across multiple screens and advance the broadcaster’s unique role in serving young audiences.

Last year, nearly one million 13-24s streamed Channel 4 via a PC or a laptop, with viewing up 17% year on year in 2024, with 16-34s the biggest single cohort (49%) of Channel 4 streamers, with Gen Z representing 20% of the accounts that viewed Channel 4.com.

“Channel 4 streamers can look forward to a content line-up that’s distinctive, entertaining and truly stands out – with our commissions reflecting our Britishness, purpose and irreverent attitude that speaks to young audiences,” said director of streaming and content strategy Kiran Nataraja.

“We’re also going to give audiences a more seamless, connected and accessible viewing experience across all of Channel 4’s services and platforms.

“These enhancements support our plan to become the first public service streamer.”
