Ex McCann heavyweight joins by The Network as new creative chair

Former president of McCann’s global community, John Mescall, is joining by The Network as creative chair.

With a marketing career expanding over 30 years, Mescall – who was once dubbed ‘The Nicest Man In Advertising’ – has been instrumental in creating a number of high-profile campaigns over the years, including Dumb Ways to Die, Where to Settle and thisAbles.

Prior to joining McCann, Mescall worked at a number of agencies in Australia and previously spent a decade running his own agency.

His accolades include Cannes prizes (including Grand Prix), DA&AD black and yellow, plus an array of others from One Show, Clios, Andys, Lia, Spikes and Adfest.

In his new role, Mescall will work closely with CEO Jack Smail as he oversees creative decision-making across the agency. He will also provide creative guidance to network members and work on projects that evaluate the creative potential of prospective members.

Mescall fills the role after by The Network’s founder and creative chair Per Pedersen passed away in 2023.

“What’s true about advertising is that the best agencies are run by creative people. And the best work happens when great talent gets to work directly with ambitious clients,” Mescall said, discussing his new role.

“This is exactly what excites and inspires me about byTheNetwork. Every agency is owned and led by creative people. Every client gets to work with those people.

“And the only thing any of us care about is creativity that’s as potent and powerful as we can make it. Why else are we here?”

Speaking about Mescall’s appointment, CEO Jack Smail added: “John’s ability to curate and unlock world-class creative solutions is extraordinary, and having him as part of this out-of-the-ordinary network feels just right.”

“We firmly believe the industry needs innovative solutions like by The Network that prioritise ideas, empower creatives and always focus on quality over quantity. Per’s vision of a new global network owned and run by creatives was a powerful one that continues to thrive and inspire.”
