Watch: John Barnes features in barbecue-filled Euros spot for plant-based food firm This

News

Footballing legend John Barnes has teamed up with plant-based food firm This to launch a new summer BBQ banger ahead of the Euros.

The video, entitled ‘This is the One’ parodies LadBaby’s Christmas Number One in a video which includes Barnes, a Gareth Southgate lookalike and an annoyingly catchy chorus.

Devised in-house at This, and coming 34 years after The World In Motion song which starred Barnes, it captures the spirit of summer and football fandom with lyrics that evoke the excitement of a Euros party and eating burgers and bangers with family and friends.

With references to England icons including Lineker, Shearer and Gazza alongside content featuring players including Foden, Palmer, Rice and Bellingham.

The lyrics are designed to stick in the head: “A Euros party, I love this feeling/So light the barby…with In_Gland winning/We’re the Barmy Army…can you hear us singing?/ And this is the one…so let’s get grilling”.

It comes as the brand is aiming to get Brits to swap out beef burgers and pork sausages for plant based bangers and burgers.

This CEO Mark Cuddigan said: “If there’s anyone qualified to make a summer banger, it’s us and who better to team up with than the legendary John Barnes. As well as making award winning bangers at This” he said.

“We believe in the joy of coming together over a meal that’s good for both our taste buds and the planet. So, fire up the grill, turn up the volume because This Is The One!” he continued.

“Every time summer comes around people talk about barbecues, football and music! Every time you mention barbecues people get excited – it’s a British tradition, and football of course, because the Euros are now here – and everyone loves a football anthem,” said John Barnes.
