Aldi offers free beer to compensate for matchday spillages in latest marketing move

News

In its latest marketing ploy, Aldi is offering free beer to help replace the 4.6 million pints of beer that get lost every time Gareth Southgate’s team score a goal.

To replace the spills, Aldi is offering 1,000 lucky fans a £5 voucher to buy beer in stores, which is the equivalent of five and a half pints or seven cans of Galahad Premium lager.

To be in with a chance of getting their hands on the voucher, fans just need to email their name and proof of ID to [email protected] and the first 1,000 will receive their voucher in time for the Euros final on 14 July.

The humorous idea follows on from a range of similar ploys like parodying Vogue, and fun billboards using bread to highlight rising pay to jobseekers.

Professor of cognitive science at Split Second Research Dr Eamon Fulcher said: “We examined online videos of what happens in a pub or large-screen bar area when England fans gather to watch a live tournament match.”

“We estimate that about 20% of the pints are spilt – 15% are thrown into the air and a further 5% are spillages due to movement.”

“Industry data confirms that around 243 million pints will be served in England during the Euros, and that doesn’t include those watching and drinking at home,” he added.

The grocer’s UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield added: “It’s no use crying over spilt beer and hopefully England fans will be crying with joy if we get to the final and win it on 14 July.”
